The last day of June seen a fine evening for football and with the championship weeks away, this was a contest that a number of other club mentors travelled to see as it had been moved a day earlier than the full round scheduled for the following night. However, a close contest was not produced. The Clans began steadily and built on two converted frees to add a further three points from play followed by a well created and executed goal before Roche raised a flag in the twentieth minute. This solidary Kevin Callaghan point was the only Roche score of the half and with five wides after that, one would be right to wander what was happening. The Clans were quicker to the ball all over the field and working for each other from 1 to 15. They were feeding their forwards with smart quick ball to each man’s advantage. The Roche defence could not cope with their pace, invention or slick passing. They moved the ball from defence and midfield with the maximum advantage for their attack and the score board did not flatter the Clans at half time. Indeed they could have been further ahead; they were dominant all over the field. On the other hand Roche were flat, sluggish, and cumbersome. Time and time again their passing broke down or the wrong option selected. Other than Aidan McCoy, not one Roche man was mastering his opponent. Kevin Callaghan was trying every tick he had to get his team scores but he was a one man show against a tight Clans defence.

The second half began with great score from David Quigley, winning the ball from the trough in he raced down the field and pointed from 20 metres to double Roche’s tally. They won the kick out but this attack yielded a wide. But the Clans torpedoed Roche with two further points, the second could easily have been a goal but it whizzed over the bar to restore the ten point differential. Another point sailed over the Roche bar before reinforcements were poured on. It was to no avail as the Clans added another point. With the score 1-12 to 0-2 Kevin Callaghan smashed one off the cross bar, a 13 meter free slipped outside the post before Liam Carthy sent over a free kick from 40 metres over the bar. This was cancelled by the Clans before two points were traded between the teams. Roche were spending more time in the Clans half but were not converting many of their good chances. Roche pushed their tally to eight points but for every score they got the Clans answered it with one of their own. The goal Roche needed never came, they had a few chances but each one produced a point rather than the required major. The final score was 1-15 to 0-8 and the Clans will be contented with their competent performance coming into the championship season where as Roche will struggle to find positives in this performance to build on for the next league match or championship campaign!
