Very heavy rain for the hours before this game and through-out the first half made underfoot conditions difficult for both teams. However, an end to end match was served up. The home team opened the scoring two minutes in with a good point and were lively in their play. Darren McConnon drew the game level with a good point two minutes later. A fine point from a long distance free kick brought Na Piarsaigh into the lead again in the seventh minute. David Quigley drew the scores level again within a minute with a well taken point created with good team work. Na Piarsaigh moved two ahead with points in the tenth and fifteenth minutes, the second a free kick. On the 18th minute Barry McConnon fielded a long delivery very well in the conditions and under considerable pressure from his marker, he fed Kevin Callaghan who dispatched the ball over the bar. This score was followed by an excellent point from Liam Carthy off his less favoured left foot to draw the scores level again at 4 points each. In the 25th minute, Na Piarsaigh moved ahead by a point but Barry McConnon done likewise within the same minute and this score was the last before the short whistle. Half time, 5 point each. In the first minute of the second half Kevin Callaghan was awarded a free and he converted the chance to put Roche ahead for the first time. Another free four minutes later drew the scores level again but the next score put Na Piarsaigh three points ahead! A point attempt well wide on the left, alone the 13 metre line stayed low then dipped behind the stretch of Aidan McCoy and into the far corner of the net. This was a most unusual score against the very reliable net minder. Roche did not manage to claw back this lead and was the most significant score of the game. But within a minute Dermot Craven had reduced the lead to two points with a fine score of his own. This was followed by another converted free kick from Liam Carthy before this score was matched with a Na Piarsaigh free kick over the Roche bar in the fifteenth minute of the second half. In the twentieth minute Kevin Callaghan scored from a free to make the score 1-7 to 0-9 but four minutes later he pulled a chance wide when all the Roche support were sure the attempt was the levelling score again. But Roche continued to press for the saving score; however this miss and that of Darren McConnon in the last minute of play were crucial to the eventual outcome of the result of this game. McConnon took possession of the ball 13 metres out and left of the goal after a good passing movement but his shot while under pressure from the defence zipped millimetres wide of the upright. These two misses were, on reflections, the reason Roche did not share or collect both points in this match, a match so vital to both teams survival in this division. Roche: Aidan McCoy, Niall Treanor, Harry O’Connell, Colm Kirk, Philip Quinn, Liam Carthy 2pts, Duane Callan, Martin Carroll, David Quigley 1pt, Patrick Quigley, Darren McConnon 1pt, Bernard McConnon, Kevin Callaghan 3pts, Dermot Craven 1pt, Barry McConnon 1pt.
