The final round of the division two league saw the Joes travelling to play the Dundalk Young Irelands. With the town team already relegated and pointless, they were only playing for pride. While a win for the Joes would guarantee them fourth spot in the table and a place in the playoffs for the second promotion spot.

The home team opened the scoring with a point from play in the first minute from Johnny Lynch. Alan Mc Kenna replied from play for the Joes, before a 50 yard pass from Tomas Smyth set up the attack that saw Lorcan Doyle put the Joes into the lead for the first time. The lead was short lived though, as a Derek Maguire defence splitting run set up the attack that lead to a Young Irelands penalty, which was smashed to the net by Mark Savage. The Joes responded well to the set back and re-established their lead with three points in three minutes. The first saw Derek Mulligans hard work rewarded when he set up Conal O Hanlon. Peter Brennan won the resultant kickout and played the ball forward to Alan Mc Kenna who set up Tomas Smyth. Solid work from Kevin Woods and Anthony Keenan in defence started the move for the third of this batch of points, which was finished off by Derek Mulligan from the left corner. The home side struck back again over the next ten minutes though, as they hit three of the four points in this period, to leave them with the slimmest of leads, the only Joes response being a Conal O Hanlon free. The last ten minutes of the half would yield only one score, coming in the 24th minute, it would be an important one. Alan Mc Kenna played a good pass into Derek Mulligan, who passed across the square to Lorcan Doyle who flicked the ball to the net.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-4, Dundalk Young Irelands 1-6

The opening ten minutes of the second period would be the most entertaining of the game, as the teams hit a total of 1-8 between them. The half was only a minute old when the Young Irelands bagged their second goal of the game, when a cross from the left was finished soccer style to the Joes net by Johnny Lynch. When corner forward Dermot Mone added a point straight after, the town team had turned a two point deficit into a two point lead. Like in the first half, the Joes dug in to turn the game around again, largely due to the efforts of Conal O Hanlon. He kicked over a point from a free first of all, before adding one from play directly from the kickout. He then turned provider for the next score, as he set up Alan Mc Kenna. Derek Mulligan was on the mark next to put the Joes into a two point lead. The Irelanders replied with a very good score from midfielder Gerard Nixon. The Joes responded with an equally good score from Tomas Smyth, before Derek Maguire chipped in with another fine score, to leave the Joes with the narrowest of leads.

The next ten minutes only produced two scores, both of them Joes points and both of them set up by Liam Mernagh, the first for Peter Brennan and the second for Derek Mulligan. The Dundalk side immediately cancelled out the second of these scores with a point from wing back Peter Flynn. The final ten minutes of normal time would only produce one score, a pointed free from Irelanders full forward Mark Savage, to leave a nervy finish for the away contingent. However, despite a staggering six minutes of additional time being played, it was the Joes who largely dominated the game, even if they couldnt extend their lead and held on for the win.
