The All Ireland Poc Fada Finals 30th July 2011
Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the First All Ireland

A Chairde,

As you are aware the annual All Ireland Poc Fada Finals take place on Annaverna on Saturday the 30th of July (the August bank holiday weekend). We are appealing to all clubs - Hurling, Camogie and Football to attend this legendary and unique event - to help where possible, or just come along to cheer on the contestants in the three categories (Senior Hurlers, Senior Camogie and Boys Under 16). Its a day out with a difference, its close by, there's no gate charge, there's spectacular panoramic views to be seen and there's the chance to walk in the footsteps of innovative and hard working members of Cumann Ógra Naomh Moninne who gave us this great competition (modern clubs can only marvel at their achievements, especially with so little in the way of resources), an enduring National Championship which is known worldwide.

Every year, as long as the competition has been running there has been in County Louth an opportunity to witness Ireland's greatest Camogs (since 2004) and Hurlers (Under 16 since 2007) at close quarters poc their their way around the Annaverna Mountain Course. To witness these individuals - over the years there have been many.. Ollie Walsh, Dinny Donnelly, Dennis Murphy, Finbarr O'Neill, Louth's own Patsy Murphy and Paul Dunne, Noel Skehan, Pat Harigan, Gerry Goodwin, Ger Cunningham, Tommy Quaid, Davy Fitzgerald, Brendan Cummins, Eoin Kelly, Graham Clarke and many more on the mountain

This is a great occasion, a fantastic venue, a celebration of Hurling and Camogie, a tangible link to our mythological heritage and certainly worth a visit! Louth is the Land of Legends and every year Ireland's greatest Hurling and Camogie "Legends" appear to re-enact Setanta's Trek!

On Friday, the eve of the All  Irelands', a Hurling Festival will take place at Cooley Kickhams' grounds on the Cooley Peninsula beginning with an Under 14 Poc Fada Competition on the Slieve Foy to Barnavave path (commencing at 4.30pm) representatives from surrounding clubs will contest this inaugural event coming from Counties Down, Armagh, Louth and Westmeath. Later in the evening an under age Hurling Blitz will commence at 6.30pm again with teams representing Down, Armagh and Louth, the age group will be for Under 10s. It is hoped that Finalists for the main event will drop by to say hello and participate in the activities.

Armagh and Louth "An Coiste Poc Fada" invite all to attend the two day celebration of "An Poc Fada Craobh na hÉireann".

If you would like to assist at the Finals or the Friday Celebrations please forward names as soon as possible to Josephine at 087-1329120 or email info to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
